There will be only a handful of Malayalees who haven’t heard of the song ‘Guruvayoor Ekadeshi Thozhuvan Povumbol’. Recently a video of a man singing this song while chopping plantains sitting inside the kitchen of Guruvayoor Mammiyoor temple became viral. It even won him the Kerala Hindus of North America’s Sreekrishna Seva Bhakta Puraskaram. For Krishnan, this was a special moment, a rare honour, which he considers a blessing from Lord Krishna. He has been actively involved in Ganamela troupes for the last 30 years and has also done Christian devotional songs as well as other Independent videos. Krishnan shares his journey with Manorama.
This award is a blessing from Guruvayurappan
This was so unexpected. And he is ecstatic. For someone who has been a professional Ganamela singer for the past 30 years, this was his first award, and he owes it all to Lord Krishna. He isn’t a trained singer but has done two independent music albums and has also sung Christian devotional songs.
That Viral song
He is in charge of the prasadam preparation at the Guruvayoor Mammiyoor temple. Krishnan sang the song while preparing prasadam for Ekadeshi. He was unaware of the fact that his daughter posted the video on Facebook. He realized it the next day when he was inundated with phone calls from friends, relatives, and even strangers. A lot of celebrities wrote about him on Facebook. That was all unexpected for him.
Similarity with Yesudas
He has often been told that his voice resembles K J Yesudas. Krishnan is happy to be compared to such a great singer.
He lives near the Guruvayoor temple. Krishnan’s family consists of his wife, son, and daughter. They adore his singing. He has signed a 1-year Prasadam preparation contract with Guruvayoor Mammiyoor temple. And of course, he will also continue his singing career.
