New Zealand to Change Student Visa Fees and Immigration Rules Starting October 1

New Zealand is doubling student visa fees from October 1, impacting international students. The government aims to cover rising processing costs but may deter potential applicants. Other visa categories also face fee hikes.

Auckland, New Zealand – The New Zealand government has announced significant changes to its student visa fees and immigration policies, set to take effect from October 1, 2024. The move aims to align visa charges with the actual cost of processing applications and create a more sustainable immigration system.

Student Visa Fees Doubled

One of the most notable changes is the doubling of student visa fees. Starting October 1, international students will have to pay NZD 750 to apply for a student visa, up from the current NZD 375. While this represents a substantial increase, it’s still considerably lower than the student visa fees in Australia, which recently doubled to AUD$1,600.

Post-Study Work Visa Changes

The post-study work visa fee is also set to increase, but with a corresponding reduction in the immigration levy. The fee will rise from NZD 490 to NZD 320, while the levy will jump from NZD 210 to NZD 1350.

Other Visa Categories Affected

The changes extend beyond student visas. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) fee will decrease slightly, but the immigration levy will increase significantly. Other visa categories, including visitor visas and skilled residence visas, will also experience fee hikes.

Rationale Behind the Changes

The New Zealand government has justified the fee increases by stating that they are necessary to cover the rising costs of processing visa applications. The changes are expected to generate additional revenue for the government, which will be used to fund immigration services.

Potential Impact on International Students

The increase in student visa fees is likely to impact the decision-making process of prospective international students. While New Zealand remains a popular study destination, the higher costs may deter some students from choosing the country

Government’s Stance on Pacific Islanders

Despite the overall fee increases, the New Zealand government has maintained its commitment to supporting its Pacific neighbors. Subsidized fees will continue to be offered to visa applicants from Pacific countries.

The upcoming changes to New Zealand’s immigration system are expected to have far-reaching consequences for international students, workers, and visitors. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the country’s overall attractiveness as a study and immigration destination.
